Montereale Valcellina, Italy - A young woman died after her long hair became tangled in the steering wheel of her car, causing it to swerve across the road into oncoming traffic.

Caterina Alzetta, 20, pictured, died in hospital from her injuries after she and her brother Pietro, 21, were cut free from the wreckage of their Ford Fiesta. She was said to have been in the front passenger seat at the time.

Her brother, who was reported to be driving the car, said the accident happened after his sister wound down her window, causing her hair to fly about.

The siblings’ father, Michele – who is head of the emergency ambulance service in their home town of Montereale Valcellina, northern Italy – said last night: ‘Tragically, her hair got caught in the steering wheel.

As I understand it, when she made a sudden movement of the head it pulled on the steering wheel.’

Two brothers aged 42 and 47 in the car hit by the Ford Fiesta were also hospitalised after the accident on the road between Montereale Valcellina and San Martino di Campagna, but are expected to recover.
