Half of drivers ignore signs

Two-thirds of drivers are befuddled by basic road signs, a survey has found.

More than half of the 2000 motorists who took part in the poll said they regularly ignore signs - and one in 20 said they “never” look.

The research, by oil company Castrol, found that three per cent of drivers had been involved in accidents as a result of road-sign confusion - which would equate to more than a million incidents across the country.

Half of the respondents did not know what “give way” road markings meant, while one in three admitted that to solve their confusion they would simply follow the car in front.

The results are partly explained by another of Castrol’s findings - just over half said they had not checked the Highway Code since taking their Learner Drivers’ test. - Daily Mail
