Hyundai has recalled a number of Santa Fe and Sonata models in the USA, due to possible airbag problems.

Only cars in the American market were affected, SA Hyundai Automotive spokesman Deon Sonnekus said.

“Hyundai America has announced a recall of a total of 199 118 of the Santa Fe SUVs, to re-programme the passive occupant detection system (pods),” Sonnekus said.

“It has been found that the front passenger airbag might not deploy in an accident with an adult of a small stature in the front passenger seat, because the pods wrongfully detects the person as a child.”

He said the system was only used in the US market.

“A total of 22 512 Sonatas have also been recalled by Hyundai America to replace one or two of the side curtain airbags, which could be inflated without being triggered in an accident,” Sonnekus said. -Sapa
