Johannesburg - Frustrated motorists who finally decided to cave in and pay their e-toll arrears in terms of the new tariff dispensation have been told they still have to pay full fees.

Sanral says the 60 percent discount on arrears will only be implemented within the next two months after the Minister of Transport determines the date on which the new tariffs will be gazetted.

Only the new monthly cap of R225 and the new lowered toll tariffs started on July 2.

Vusi Mona, general manager of communications for the South African National Roads Agency says the rest of the changes will be implemented in a phased roll-out over the next 17 months, including the linking of the renewal of the vehicle to the non-payment of tolls.

Mona said this was made clear in an explanatory memorandum which was included in the toll tariff notice gazette in which it was explained that it would not happen on July 2.

IT’LL HAPPEN “IN PHASES”

“The 60 percent discount has not been implemented as yet. We are gratified by the public’s willingness to settle their debt, but request their patience as the system requires changes to enable it to process the implementation of the 60 percent debt,” he said.

He said Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, when he made the announcement in May, said the new dispensation would be implemented in phases.

Timelines for implementation for the rest of the changes are dependent on legal and regulatory processes, said Mona.

Some motorists have also been complaining of no longer getting the 50 percent discount, and Mona said this was being investigated.

“We are aware of the unintended repercussions that the revised standard tariffs has on the discount and we are investigating,” he said.

Complaints can be logged through the e-toll customer service channels such as the call centre on 080 072 6725 or the website www.sanral.co.za/e-toll or at any customer service outlet.
