London is due to host a major motor show in 2016 with an event which the organizers hope will rival similar car exhibitions in Geneva and Frankfurt.

The last motor show to be held in the British capital took place at London's Excel 2008.

Previous motor shows were held regularly from 1903 to 2008 at the venues Crystal Palace, Olympia and Earl's Court, where many models were unveiled for the first time.

Low attendance figures and a lack of interest from manufacturers meant a planned 2010 motor in London had to be cancelled.

The 2016 expo was announced by Prince Michael of Kent. He said manufacturers were being invited to attend the event in Battersea from May 5 to 8, 2016.

“It is right that London should have a show to rank alongside cities like Geneva and Frankfurt,” Prince Micheal told the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The SMMT owns the rights to the previous show and it will not be affiliated to the planned event.

London's new motor show would focus on electric and hybrid vehicles, along with road safety and education, said Prince Michael.
