London - After pocketing £8 million (R155m) from the sale of his beloved McLaren F1, you might have expected Rowan Atkinson to splash out on another supercar.

But the Mr Bean actor appears to have opted for something a bit more economical – and eco-friendly.

The comedian has been seen in an electric BMW i3, which has a top speed of 150km/h.

It is aBean trades supercar for green i3 world away from his F1, one of 64 made, which could hit speeds of 386km/h. He sold the supercar early this year, 18 years after paying £634 000 (R12.28m) for it. However, while the sought-after supercar can struggle to make ten miles to the gallon, his new runaround can get 160km out of a full charge.

It is charged using public power points or standard plug sockets, and takes four hours to charge fully.

Car enthusiast Atkinson, thought to be worth £71 million (R1.3bn), owns a collection including a Jaguar Mk7, an Aston Martin DB2, a vintage Ford Falcon and a Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe.

This month it was revealed the 60-year-old is selling his former family home after breaking up with wife Sunetra, 53. He is dating comedian Louise Ford, 32, whom he met when they starred together in a West End play.
