Thirty-five people have died on the Northern Cape's roads so far this festive season.

Provincial transport department spokeswoman Keitumetse Moticoe said on Friday no deaths had been recorded on Christmas or Boxing Day.

"While this number is unacceptably high, our efforts with the festive season road traffic plan continue to work to curb the number of road fatalities, increase obedience and raise awareness on road safety."

Two people had been arrested in Colesberg for speeding, she said.

The highest speed recorded was 167km/h.

Eighteen people were arrested for drunken driving and a total of 2620 summonses to appear in court were issued since the beginning of December.

The summonses included 724 for speeding, 45 for overloading, 155 for defects with tyres, 67 for defective front lights, and 50 for using a cellphone while driving. - Sapa
