Following years of hints, rumblings and rumours, Rolls Royce has confirmed that it will be launching an SUV within three years.

Call it sacrilegious if you will but Rolls Royce claims that many of its “discerning” customers have urged the company to create such a car.

According to Rolls Royce, the as-yet-unnamed vehicle offers “the luxury of a Rolls Royce in a vehicle that can cross any terrain.”

The announcement was made on Wednesday in an open letter from the Chairman and Chief Executive of the prestigious car maker, which also promised that the new product will boast “exceptional presence, elegance and purpose.” As you'd expect.

To silence any potential heritage snobs, the company's statement also reminds the world of how its two founding fathers, Charles Rolls and Sir Henry Royce, took top honours in numerous overland adventures in the early days, including the Scottish Reliability Trials and Alpine Trials. Lawrence of Arabia also crossed vast unexplored deserts and mountain ranges in a Rolls Royce.

The open letter ends off with another reference to its co-founder: “Sir Henry Royce famously said: 'When it does not exist, design it.' (With the new vehicle) we are doing just that.”

The rest is up to speculation for now, with Rolls Royce only mentioning that it'll be a “high-bodied” car with an all-new aluminium architecture.
