Pietermaritzburg - Be warned! Roving roadblocks will be a regular feature in the city until after New Year with traffic police on the lookout for all offences, from drunken driving to not wearing seatbelts.

This was the warning from the Msunduzi Municipality to keep road users safe this festive season.

Spokeswoman Thobeka Mafumbatha said the traffic sub-unit had a management plan in place to address issues of congestion and traffic regulation enforcement, especially driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

ZERO TOLERANCE

Officers would also be looking for those with outstanding warrants of arrests, unroadworthy vehicles, drivers without licences and those speeding.

“There is also zero tolerance for not wearing seat belts for both driver and passengers, and the use of cellphones while driving,” she said.

There has already been an increase in roadblocks in the city. However, the emphasis was on high traffic volume roads.

The municipality was owed about R12 million in traffic fines for which warrants had been issued.
