Johannesburg - Gauteng Premier David Makhura has appealed to motorists to exercise patience while he negotiates a "major financial relief" about the payment of e-tolls.

Makhura was speaking during the presentation of his second State of the Province address in the Gauteng Legislature this morning.

He said his government was consulting with Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa "to develop a better dispensation which will mitigate the negative impact of the e-tolls on the people of Gauteng, especially the middle- and lower-income groups".

He said: "The final decision will be made once the work of the intergovernmental team is completed. I am confident that the new dispensation should provide major financial relief to motorists, while simplifying the payment system to make it easy for road users to pay."

Makhura did not give details of the major financial relief but insiders say their priorities were to increase the fuel levy and motor vehicles registration and licensing fees. The team was also considering tolling peripheral roads of Gauteng.
