Johannesburg - Private emergency medical service providers planning to protest against e-tolls met on Monday to plan their mass action.

Representatives from First-life EMS, Supreme Care Ambulances, Emuseni EMS, TN Rescue, Lesiba Ambulance Services and Prince Med EMS met in Nasrec, south of Joburg, to discuss how they would deliver their memorandum to Sanral.

“We’d like to be exempt from paying e-toll fees like other EMS providers. We would like to know how we differ from government ambulances and what the criteria is for them to allow you to be exempt,” a representative from Emuseni EMS said.

The protest is due to start on the morning of June 8. About 20 EMS providers are planning to gather as many ambulances as they can and then drive in convoy to Sanral’s offices.

“We will be driving normally, in an orderly manner. The idea is visibility and not disruption.

“It may affect traffic, but the idea is also not to leave skeleton services. We will all be fully functional,” the representative added.

The protest action will not include ER24 and Emer-G-Med staff, they said, adding that they believed they had cut a deal with Sanral.
