Johannesburg - Ever wanted your very own car company? Well, the notion might not be as far-fetched as you think, as little-known South African carmaker Puma Cars is up for sale.

Originally started as a Brazilian kit-car company in 1964, the business was bought and relocated to South Africa by its current caretaker and CEO Jack Wijker in 1986.

The Volkswagen Beetle-based sportscars are now built at a small factory in Babalegi, 40km north of Pretoria, but the entire production facility is now for sale by its 50/50 owners, Wijker and his business partner Cyril Ramaphosa.

MAKE THEM AN OFFER

Wijker says the purchase price is negotiable but a valuation of the business, which currently consists of body moulds, tools, spares and about 10 cars in various stages of completion, has been estimated at just over R2-million.

Only 34 cars have been built since operations began in South Africa, and cars have up to now been sold on a made-to-order basis. The Puma, which loosely resembles a Ferrari Dino of the 1970s, is offered with a choice of 1.6, 1.8, 1.9 or highly-modified 2.1-litre engines.

Options include front disc brakes, metallic-paint finish and leather upholstery. Prices start from R148 500.
