February failed to bring any good vibes into the motor industry, with the month's vehicle sales declining by 3.1 percent compared to the same month in 2013.
Total vehicle sales amounted to 51 814, of which 83.5 percent took place through the dealers while 8.7 percent went to the rental industry, 4.0 to corporate fleets and 3.8 to government.
While passenger car sales fell by 5.4 percent, light commercials actually gained 0.9 percent while heavy commercials were up by 3.6 percent and extra heavies by 19.7 percent.
BUYERS UNDER PRESSURE
Though the gains made by the investor-trend-sensitive commercial sectors could be read as a positive economic indicator, the car sales show that the average consumer is still under pressure.
According to Naamsa, consumer confidence is being dented by high levels of debt as well as sharp increases in energy and transport costs, while rising new car prices on the back of a weaker rand will certainly put a damper on vehicle sales this year.
But that's enough doom and gloom for one day as people are still buying vehicles in large numbers so let's take a look at how they fared.
