Cape Town - A football fan who hit 200km/h in his sports car because he was "late for a soccer match" never got to see the game - because he was arrested by traffic officers.

Members of the city's Ghost Squad had to be at their best behind the wheel on Saturday as the Audi R8 led them on a chase along the R300.

Reaching speeds of more than 200km/h, the Audi driver wove in and out of traffic, allegedly endangering the lives of other road users and failing to indicate as he changed lanes. When the traffic officers forced him to stop, he told them he drove like that because he was late for a soccer match.

ARROGANCE

Mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith was scathing in his comments.

"It's this type of arrogance that contributes to the carnage on our roads," he said. "This driver could have killed somebody as a result of his actions, all because he was running late for a game.

"In many ways, I suppose it's a fitting metaphor, because so many people think that road safety is a game. It was also a game to the driver who nearly killed two pedestrians in Philippi on Saturday. He was found to be five times over the legal limit, but was on his way to the bottle store for more alcohol."

The city's law enforcers arrested 55 people over the weekend for offences including drunken driving, possession of drugs, fraud and reckless and negligent driving.
