German model-car maker Robert Guelpen will soon be selling a 1/8 scale replica of Lamborghini’s new Aventador LP 700-4 supercar, which at R46-million costs nearly 10 times what a real Aventador costs.

Like the real thing, the model Aventador will get a carbon-fibre body formed in a conclave oven, but the little one gets the weave interlaced with a thread of gold 1/1000mm thick. The tiny rims, seats, steering wheel and entire interior will be cast in solid gold and platinum, with high-carat gemstones worth around R20-million set in visible areas such as the engine compartment and cabin.

Guelpen hopes the project will get three entries into the Guinness Book of World Records for “Most precious model car”, “Most secure container and showcase” which will be made of bulletproof glass, and “World’s most expensive Lamborghini logo” which will be made of gold, platinum and gemstones and mounted inside the bulletproof showcase.

The model will be auctioned this December with a starting price of R35.7-million or it can be bought now directly from Guelpen for R46-million. At least R5.1-million of the proceeds will be donated to children’s charities. For now the model is only a prototype, but upon sale the world’s most expensive model will be built over three months and presented in March next year.

A fully specced Lamborghini Aventador will cost a cool R6.5-million when it becomes available in South Africa later this month. - Star Motoring
