Three tow truck drivers have appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate's Court in connection with fraudulent driving licences.

Gauteng community safety spokesman Thapelo Moiloa said they were released pending the completion of a wider ongoing investigation into tow truck drivers.

He added: “We cannot keep them in custody forever, but while they are out they are not allowed to drive any vehicle. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, they will be charged accordingly.”

The men were arrested in an operation on the East Rand.

“Various defects were noted on their licences. The receipt number and licence numbers did not correspond, and date of issue was October 1, 2021,” said Moiloa.

He said more arrests were imminent, as the arrest of the three provided links to a bigger scam in Gauteng.

“Police are looking for three men who are currently on the run. This is the first time fraudulent licences were found in the possession of tow truck operators.”

Towing companies had given their full support and were willing to screen their drivers, Moiloa said. - Sapa
