Johannesburg - The normally outspoken former Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi remained mum on Monday morning over his arrest on speeding charges.

Vavi was nabbed for driving at 207km/h on the R24 freeway near Edenvale in Ekurhuleni on Sunday morning, sources said.

The speed limit on the busy road is 120km.

His phone went straight to voicemail on Monday morning and he has not responded to text messages.

His comrade, Patrick Craven, could only say: “I’m afraid that I do not have any more information than you.”

Ekurhuleni metro police department (EMPD) spokesman Wilfred Kgasago would not confirm or deny that Vavi was arrested, saying only that six people were arrested on Sunday morning.

“We arrest people and there are legalities involved (so) we can’t issue names until they appear in court. We can’t do that,” he said.

But sources confirmed that Vavi was among those arrested and that he was later released on bail.

Vavi was among the prominent people who led a march against corruption in Pretoria last week.

He was axed from Cosatu in March this year for rebelling against the federation’s decision to expel metalworkers union Numsa – bringing a painful end to his 16 years at the helm of the labour federation.

He was earlier suspended for having a sexual encounter with a junior Cosatu staffer.

Also arrested on Sunday was singer Steve Hofmeyr’s son Armand.

He was caught driving at 185km/h in a 120km/h zone on Sunday afternoon on the N4 near Bronkhorstspruit, said Gauteng traffic police spokesman Obed Sibasa.

Armand, who had been driving a white Ford ST, was expected to appear in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
