Johannesburg - Keeping a detailed mileage logbook, with actual pen and paper, is possibly one of the most tedious parts of a modern business person’s daily routine.

Those of us who drive a company car or use a private vehicle for business travel, will know that the South African Revenue Service, as well as the companies we work for, demand an accurate, detailed and compliant logbook at the end of each month or financial year - but now there’s an electronic device to simplify the process.

The GPS Logbook is a small and hassle-free device that plugs into the cigarette lighter of a vehicle and records every trip.

With minimal effort the device keeps track of opening and closing kilometre readings, the destination, the reason for the visit and whether the journey was for business or private travel. The data recorded can then be easily uploaded via USB onto a computer using the GPS Logbook website where trips can be viewed using Google Maps, categorised accordingly and annotated with comments.

The recordings can also be used by business owners who need to keep track of a vehicle’s every movement, monitor wayward staff, or substantiate billable hours to clients.

BUY OR RENT

The GPS Logbook is available to buy online for R999, or to rent (starting 1 February) at R99 a month with a minium contract period of one year. An optional Pro Account, which adds a mobile app, enabling you to track a vehicle’s mileage, usage and position on a mobile device, as well as automatic address look up and even more detailed and customised categorisation of each trip, is available for an extra R49 a month. The Pro Account features are included for rental clients.

For the premium customer who wants a hassle-free solution, the new GPS logbook Live is available for R1399 and a subscription of R99 per month.

The monthly subscription cost includes the Pro Account and covers the sim card, airtime and data management, ensuring the vehicle is continuously tracked and the data is updated in real-time.
