Citroen crosses into small SUV turf

As if to drive home the fact that they're twins, Citroën unveiled its C4 Aircross on the same day as Peugeot took the wraps off of its 4008.

Yet although the two compact SUVs, which are also based on the Mitsubishi ASX, are so closely related, PSA has resisted the temptation to do a simple badge swop and as a result the Citroen looks markedly different at the front and back, with even the rear side window having been altered. In line with its brand character, the Citroen has a slightly more quirky vibe about it.

Clearly positioned at the compact end of the SUV continuum, the Citroën measures 4.34 metres in length, 1.8m in width and stands 1.63m off the ground. A 10.6m turning circle makes for easy town use and the 442-litre boot should meet most family needs.

Other novelties include a large panoramic glass sunroof, illuminated by LEDs at night, as well as a reversing camera, Bluetooth connectivity and a touch screen navigation system.

Depending on the country in question, the Aircross will be available in both front-wheel drive and permanent all-wheel drive guises and its European line-up also offers the same four-engine range as the Peugeot 4008.

The 1.6-litre motors put out 85kW and 152Nm in petrol form and 82kW/270Nm in the case of the turbodiesel. There's also a pair of 2-litre motors, the petrol kicking out 113kW and 198Nm and the turbodiesel good for 110kW and 300Nm. You can only get six-speed manual gearboxes in the diesels, with the petrols making do with a five-speed shifter or a CVT in the case of the 2-litre.

With the UK launch slated for the second half of next year, expect it to reach our shores by the end of that year.
