The final showdown in the inaugural SA SupaDrift series was run over the three days of the Durban Motor Show last weekend (8-10 November) where the first SA Drifting champion was crowned, as the youngest driver in the series, 19-year-old Jason Webb, took tops points to write his name in the history books.

The series achieved national championship status this year when three top drifting clubs merged to form a Motor Sport SA-endorsed league, competing in eight meetings around South Africa, in Johannesburg, Kimberly, Mahikeng, Port Shepstone and Durban.

The finale at the Durban Motor Show was not without drama - there were no less than five crashes as the drivers pushed themselves to the limit on a slippery circuit. The finals on Sunday saw the unofficial champion of the past two years, Wade van Zummerun, take top points, followed closely by Jim McFarlane, Webb and David Nell.

But when the points for the season were tallied, it was the Gauteng teenager who topped the standings ahead of Van Zummeren (Eastern Cape), Mikey Radloff (Eastern Cape) and Shane Gutzeit (KwaZulu-Natal). Rookie of the year was Cape Town's Sean February.

The 2014 SupaDrift Series will start at the Wings and Wheels festival at Ysterplaat in Cape Town on 7 and 8 December.
