Nissan takes pride in its all-electric Leaf being the world's first mainstream electric vehicle, but that's not the limit of its ambitions with this EV.

On the 26th of June, Nissan will enter a Leaf in the 89th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado, USA. Nissan off-road racing champion Chad Hord will take to the wheel in this Production Class entry.

Besides the removal of some interior bits and bobs like the seats and carpets to make room for safety essentials like the roll cage, racing seats and safety harnesses, the Pikes Peak Leaf will be very close to showroom specification.

This means that power is from a lithium-ion battery made up of 48 compact modules and a high-response 80kW AC synchronous motor.

Nissan spokesperson Ron Stukenberg believes that electric vehicles perform very well in demanding situations like the Pikes Peak hill climb and that the abundance of torque available in such a motor will be a definite advantage.
