160km/h might not seem very fast to most of us, but for a gigantic and heavy monster truck designed to crush obstacles at low speeds, this is something of an epic velocity.

In the good ol' US of A, the Raminator Monster Truck has just become the world's fastest monster truck, as verified by Guinness World Records.

The record speed of 99.10mph (159.4km/h) was achieved with Brothers Racing driver Mark Hall at Circuit of the Americas in Texas on 15 December. The previous record was 96.9mph (155.9km/h).

Like all good monster trucks, the Chrysler Ram-based Raminator spends most of its time touring the country and crushing scrap yard fodder for frivolous entertainment.

It weighs a hefty 4672kg and is hauled along by a supercharged Hemi V8 that's been modified to produce “more than 2000 horsepower” which is about 1491kW in modern metric speak.

Built by Hall Brothers Racing in Illinois, the Raminator is valued at over $150 000 (R1.75 million).
