The world's toughest rally forced South African driver Duncan Vos into retirement after he rolled his Imperial Toyota team Hilux on stage three between Pisco and Nazca in Peru.
Vos, together with navigator Rob Howie, was running in 12th position overall and the pair finished tenth in last year's race.
In spite of rolling his vehicle on the third stage on Monday, Vos refused to give up and managed to nurse the racing bakkie home in 48th position.
However, after inspecting the damage that night, the Toyota Motorsport team found that the roll cage was too badly damaged for Vos and Howie to continue.
Team principal Glyn Hall explained: “Unfortunately the roll cage has been damaged in a crucial area and for safety reasons we have unfortunately had to withdraw the car. “Both Duncan and Rob are fine but obviously very sad that they are unable to continue.”
Vos' team-mate Giniel de Villiers did not have the best of days either, having driven an extra 20km due to navigational errors, which saw his overall position drop from second to sixth.
