McLaren can rest easy; their MP4-12C still rules as the king of our quarter-mile hit parade.

With its time of just 11.3 seconds the British supercar is the quickest car we've ever tested over the quarter-mile (402.3m) distance, and just a snip faster than the previous generation Porsche 911 Turbo (however, with the new 911 Turbo coming soon, that record may be under threat).

But even though no one's toppled the McLaren from its perch since we last published our Quarter Mile Kings late last year, a number of very brisk cars have come our way for testing which we've added to the evergrowing list.

All the cars in this list were tested by us at the Gerotek facility using satellite-based Vbox equipment.

Of those, the new-generation Porsche Boxster S (SA's recently-announced Car of the Year) and its coupé cousin, the Cayman S , have been particularly impressive. Both cars recorded identical 13.4 second quarter-mile sprints - a time which puts these relatively “entry-level” sports cars in some elite company, including much more powerful (but heavier) Aston Martins and Bentleys.

Other notable newcomers in our velocity list include the Audi RS4 Avant and Range Rover Supercharged (both on 13.7 secs), while others joining the ranks of the roomy-butzoomy are the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 (14.1) and BMW X6 M50d (14.2).

Slightly further down the list, the new seventh-generation Golf GTI posted 14.9 secs to go equal with Renault's Megane RS Cup in the hot-hatch stakes, while the new Opel Astra OPC was just a shade behind at 15.1 secs.

So without further ado,
