Vehicles from Range Rover, Toyota, Ford and Porsche retain their values best in South Africa.

This is according to data from Transunion, publishers of the Auto Dealers’ Guide, which determines its trade values from monthly vehicle sales reported.

In a survey of cars bought new in 2011 that best retained their value this year, the diesel-driven Range Rover Evoque 2.2 SD4 Dynamic topped the chart and was still worth 80.82 percent of its original purchase price.

The results were announced in the third annual People’s Wheels Awards run by Standard Bank and Joburg publishers The Future Group.

Other vehicles to score in the top percentile were the Toyota Fortuner 3.0D-4D, Ford Focus ST and the Porsche Panamera.

Cars that also retained their value well after two years and achieved a score of 77 percent or higher included the Fiat Punto 1.4, Porsche Cayenne and Boxster, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Porsche 911, Hyundai i10 1.25, BMW X5, BMW 120d, Mercedes-Benz C350 CDi and Kia Rio 1.6.

The worst performer was the BMW 760Li, which was worth just 49.18 percent of its original purchase price after two years.

Other vehicles to score under 60 percent included the Chevrolet Spark and Optra, Nissan Tiida, BMW 3 Series, Volvo S40, Mitubishi Lancer, Chery Tiggo, Renault Clio, VW Beetle and Tata Indica.

However, in certain cases these were previous-generation cars that saw their values drop more than average because they were replaced by newer models. -Star Motoring
