Clarkson puts his foot in it - again

This was probably the least offensive of the modifications Top Gear made to the cars on their Indian Christmas Special.

The BBC's potty-mouthed bad boy has been at it again - this time upsetting Indian viewers in a Top Gear Christmas Special by making offensive remarks about the country's clothing, trains, food and history.

He even poked fun at India's notorious lack of sanitation for most of its people by fitting a toilet in the boot of a classic Jaguar XJS V12 coupé and telling co-presenter James May: “This is perfect for India because everyone who comes here gets the trots.”

The premise for the show was that the Top Gear crew were in India to help boost UK trade links with the subcontinent - so in one scene they hung banners on trains that read 'Eat English muffins' and 'British IT is good for your company'.

When the trains separated, the first slogan lost its last three letters, while the second become (intentionally) even ruder.

Then Clarkson took off his pants (on camera!) to show two Indian dignitaries how to use a trouser press.

National Union of Teachers policy officer Owen Hathway tweeted: “What's wrong with the BBC that they think casual racist stereotyping is acceptable on Top Gear?”

A spokeswoman for the public broadcaster confirmed that it had received 23 complaints about Wednesday evening's programme, and added: “If viewers or religious groups want to complain, they can complain to the BBC. We won't be responding through the media.”

Top Gear is often intentionally non-PC, notably when co-presenter Richard Hammond labelled a Mexican-built car 'lazy and feckless, like the people who built it'.

But Clarkson's most offensive remarks weren't even on his own show. In November 2011 he prompted almost 22 000 complaints - and an official inquiry - with his comments on The One Show about public-sector strikers, when he said: “I'd have them all shot. I would take them outside and execute them in front of their families.”

Maybe Jezza should stick to talking about cars - although Elon Musk of Tesla might give us an argument on that one!
