Harare - Sixteen people were killed in southern Zimbabwe on Monday when a minibus collided head-on with a truck on the main road to the South African border.

Eleven others were seriously injured in the crash and were admitted to hospital, said police spokesman Paul Nyathi.

The minibus was travelling from Masvingo to the border at Beitbridge early in the morning when it hit a South African registered truck coming from the opposite direction.

Fourteen people were killed instantly while two others died on their way to hospital, Nyathi said on Monday.

Road accidents are common in Zimbabwe, where highways are riddled with potholes due to years of neglect.
