33 die in Congo road crash

A drunk truck driver taking people to an electoral campaign meeting in south-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo smashed into a mango tree, in a crash local officials said killed 33.

The accident took place near Likasi in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Katanga province, where the passengers were due to attend the launch of a local MP’s campaign for the November 28 general elections.

“There were 33 dead. Thirty-two died on the spot and one of the wounded died of his injuries in hospital,” the province’s top interior ministry official, Jean-Marie Dikanga Kazadi, told AFP. – Sapa-AFP
