Gaborone - A Zimbabwean man appeared in Botswana's Molepolole Magistrate's Court on Wednesday for allegedly obtaining an identity card illegally last year.

Wilson Banda allegedly presented his name as Wilson Wilber Brother to Botswana's labour and home affairs ministry, a Sapa correspondent reported.

Banda said his wife, Martha Kwaliba, who was from Botswana, obtained his birth certificate in February 2014. He allegedly used this birth certificate to get his identity card. Kwaliba had since allegedly fled to South Africa.

Magistrate William Modise said Kwaliba was likely to be convicted if it was found she provided home affairs with false information.

Banda was being held in custody and was expected to appear in court again later in the month.
