Harare - Women in Zimbabwe should be allowed to wear mini-skirts without being harassed because they used to wear loincloths, Zimbabwe's vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa was quoted as saying by Newsday on Tuesday.
He said white colonisers had come along who insisted on wearing full clothing.
“Women used to wear nhembe (a short apron) but no one protested,” he said.
“Then came the whites with clothes that covered the whole body,” Newsday, which is privately owned, quoted Mnangagwa as saying.
“If a woman parades herself in a mini-skirt, leave her, that is what she wants.”
Minis and whether Zimbabwean women should wear them have been in the news since a woman was forcibly undressed by touts at a minibus taxi rank in Harare in December. They were unhappy with the length of her dress.
“What matters are (a woman's) morals, not dressing. It is her right,” the vice president added.
