Harare - A groom at stables in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, found three animals he did not expect to see in the paddock early on Thursday morning - elephants.
Charles Mutale saw the elephants walking across the back paddock of the Southern Equestrian Centre, which houses the Healing With Horses Therapeutic Centre for disabled and disadvantaged children.
“No, he wasn't drinking the night before. And no, he wasn't dreaming either!” Healing With Horses said in a post on its website.
It said tracks had been found “that are consistent with the size and shape of elephant footprints”.
“And on the far side there is evidence that they managed to hop lightly over our lower fence and then proceeded to destroy our neighbour's higher fence,” the post read.
It was not clear where the elephants came from, although a wildlife orphanage was located not too far away.
“Our guy was stone-cold sober. He saw them walking through the paddock at about five this morning,” an official manning the centre's phone told Sapa.
The horses were unharmed but were found huddled together.
