Windhoek - Members of a new land movement on Thursday called on all young and landless Namibians to join a mass action and apply for a plot of land in every town.
The group, which calls itself Land Activists, expected thousands of people to submit application forms to municipalities next month.
“On Friday, 27 February it's on. Fearless youth and landless people will submit the forms to municipalities in all towns of the country,” the group said in a statement.
The land activists were scouting for volunteers to act as co-ordinators in each town.
The group said it would prepare template application forms and make them available on social media for downloading.
“There will be no town left unattended. After the first such mass action in the 'capitalist paradise' Windhoek last November we are now ready to take the land gospel to other towns,” it said.
The group intended to inform police in advance about the mass action. It was formed two months ago when Job Amupanda, a prominent member of the ruling Swapo party's youth wing and five other people, initiated a land grab in the lush Windhoek suburb of Kleine Kuppe.
They cleared bush on an unserviced plot and erected a pole with the handwritten notice stating “Erf 2014, repositioning”.
Amupanda resigned a few days later from his position of information and mobilisation secretary in the Swapo Youth League.
He was suspended from the party shortly afterwards and remains suspended.
In December he mobilised over 14,000 young Namibians who applied to the Windhoek municipality for a plot.
High property prices and a lack of serviced plots in towns exacerbate the housing situation in Namibia, forcing thousands to live in shacks.
