Harare - Zimbabwe’s First Lady, Grace Mugabe, sparked outrage on social media at the weekend when she declared that the way some women dressed was the reason that they were targeted for rape.

Addressing Zanu-PF supporters at a rally in Mberengwa on Friday, she said: “You walk around wearing miniskirts displaying your thighs and inviting men to drool over you, then you want to complain when you have been raped? It’s unfortunate because it will be your fault.”

She said Zimbabwean women should follow her example to avoid becoming victims.

“Wear clothes like Mai Mugabe or you can choose trousers, but not those which are too tight.

“These types of clothes are the signs of moral decadence in our country.”

Two months ago her husband, President Robert Mugabe, said that his government was considering castrating rapists.

In response to Grace’s comments, Leandri J van Vuuren tweeted: “Such ignorance!!! ‘If you wear miniskirts and get raped … it’s your fault’.”

Firdose Moonda said: “Hang your head in shame #GraceMugabe. Women will not put up with being told they are to blame for rape.”

@TshohanaM tweeted: “To all rape survivors, Grace Mugabe is wrong, it was never your fault!”
