Harare - Zimbabwe's main journalists union said on Thursday it was concerned about the welfare of abducted activist Itai Dzamara.
“As journalists we have worked with comrade Dzamara in the past and we naturally became concerned about his welfare,” Foster Dongozi of the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) said in a statement.
“ZUJ joins all Zimbabweans who have called for a quick solution to what is obviously a difficult and trying period for his family,” Dongozi added.
Dzamara is a former journalist who has been leading small protests in central Harare since late last year, calling on President Robert Mugabe, 91, to step down.
He was abducted half-shaved from a barber shop in a Harare township at 11am on Monday.
Lawyers have not found him in police custody, despite being told on Wednesday that he was being held at Harare Central police station.
His “Occupy Africa Unity Square” community group says in its latest update that it believes Dzamara, 36, is at that police station or elsewhere in police custody.
Jestina Mukoko, a human rights activist abducted from her home in Norton in December 2008 and held incommunicado for several weeks, told a civil society meeting on Thursday that the people who kidnapped her had been “protected”.
