Washington - The US State Department on Wednesday condemned the “horrific bombings” that hit two cities in northern Nigeria and killed dozens.
“We denounce the callous terrorist acts that have taken place repeatedly in Nigeria and other countries in the Lake Chad Basin and offer our condolences to the victims and their families,” US State Department spokesman John Kirby told a daily news briefing.
More than 30 people were killed and 80 others injured on Tuesday in a bomb explosion that hit a motor park in Yola, the Adamawa State capital in north-east Nigeria.
On Wednesday, two female suicide bombers detonated their improvised explosive devices at a phone market in the northern city of Kano, killing at least 11 people and leaving dozens injured, according to witnesses and security source.
Boko Haram, a Nigeria-based terror group, was suspected to be behind the attacks.
Boko Haram operates in northeastern Nigeria, Chad, Niger and northern Cameroon.
The group was designated as a foreign terrorism organisation by the United States in 2013.
“Those responsible for these crimes must be held accountable,” Kirby said, adding that the United States will “work with Nigeria and its neighbours to defeat Boko Haram and to address violent extremism in the region.”
