Maputo, Mozambique - Authorities in Mozambique say assailants killed a prominent academic and expert in constitutional law by firing on the car he was riding in along a central thoroughfare in Maputo, the capital.

Maputo Central Hospital says Gilles Cistac died of his wounds after he was brought to the hospital on Tuesday.

Antonio Gaspar, a presidential adviser, says the interior ministry has been instructed to arrest those responsible for Cistac's death so that they can be severely punished.

Police are investigating possible motives for the killing.

Cistac, a Mozambican of French origin, has worked as an adviser to various Cabinet ministers over the years.
