Cape Town - South Africa’s department of international relations said on Friday it was monitoring the situation in Bamako, Mali, where gunmen stormed a hotel and killed at least three people and are reporting to hold 170 people hostage.

“We are monitoring the situation and our embassy are trying to find out if there are any South Africans in the hotel,” department spokesman Clayson Monyela said.

About 80 hostages were released before Malian, US and French forces stormed the hotel on Friday afternoon.

A Malian commander of the special forces told journalists that there were at least a dozen attackers.
