Cairo -

Five Egyptian police conscripts and an officer were killed on Tuesday when a roadside bomb hit an army-police patrol in the restive Sinai Peninsula, the Interior Ministry said.

Two other conscripts were injured in the attack on the road between the provincial capital, Al-Arish, and the town of Rafah on the border with the Gaza Strip, the ministry said.

The remote peninsula has seen regular attacks on security forces despite an ongoing military campaign against jihadist operating in the area.

The largest militant group in the Sinai, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, has said it carried out a similar bombing that killed 11 policemen two weeks ago.

It has also claimed responsibility for numerous attacks on security forces in other parts of Egypt since the ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi last year. - Sapa-dpa
