Harare - One person died and two were injured on Wednesday when an elevator fell several floors in a government building in the Zimbabwean capital Harare, ZBC television reported.

Three technicians are understood to have been working on four old elevators at Chaminuka Building, where the spy agency - the Central Intelligence Organisation - has offices.

“An elevator car they were decommissioning accidentally fell,” the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) said in its main evening news bulletin.

Earlier, unconfirmed reports said that the lift had fallen nine floors. This was not confirmed by the TV report.

“The three were taken to hospital, where one died. Medical personnel say the condition of the other two is stable,” the ZBC said.

The technicians were employees of a company called New View.

The Herald newspaper warned in a report in 2012 that Zimbabwe's more than 1 000 elevators were “death-traps” because most were not being serviced.

Investigations are continuing.
