New York - Human Rights Watch says that violent attacks by mostly Muslim and Christian militias on each other's communities in the Central African Republic are spiralling out of control, setting the stage for “large-scale massacres and counter-massacres.”

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says in a report released on Friday that the Security Council should “explore the option of a possible United Nations peacekeeping mission.”

Human Rights Watch's UN director Philippe Bolopion is calling for the United Nations to send in peacekeepers to protect civilians.

Bolopion says that a current African Union peacekeeping force in the country is not succeeding in protecting Muslim and Christian villagers from militia attacks. - Sapa-AP
