Lusaka - Zambia and Indonesia have agreed to cement bilateral ties, the Zambia Daily Mail said on Wednesday, after leaders of the two countries met on the sidelines of the 60th Asia-Africa Conference in Jarkata.
Zambian Vice-President Inonge Wina and her Indonesian counterpart Yusuf Kalla held talks on the sidelines of the conference during which they discussed issues of mutual interests.
“We discussed a number of issues in the meeting, economic issues, areas of agriculture and research in aquaculture. It was really a successful meeting,” Wina was quoted as saying by the paper.
The Indonesian government, she said, agreed to allow Zambian students to receive training on aquaculture and agricultural research in Indonesia, and that there is need for Zambia to follow Indonesia’s practice of exporting finished timber products to stop the rampant destruction of forestry resources.
The two countries also agreed to work together to explore Zambia’s untapped natural resources, and to cooperate in the tourism industry.
Wina is in Indonesia to attend the Asia-Africa conference. She said the conference is a significant event where Zambia’s former freedom fighters once drew inspiration for fight for independence.
Delegates from 109 Asian and African countries, 16 observer countries and 25 international organisations are attending the conference which is scheduled to wrap up on Friday.
