Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma has congratulated Ian Khama on his re-election as President of Botswana, the international relations department said on Thursday.

“The elections in Botswana are a testament to the strength of democracy and the underlying belief that the voice of the people must be heard,” said spokesman Clayson Monyela.

“In this regard, the president wishes to commend all the political parties and people of Botswana for the conducive and peaceful environment in which the elections were held.”

Zuma said South Africa and Botswana, as members of the Southern African Development Community and the African Union, bilateral relations were also based on shared values of mutual respect, commitment to democracy, good governance, the rule of law and respect for human rights.

“I am sure that these existing good relations built over the years will continue to grow and prosper under your able leadership,” said Zuma.
