Johannesburg - A Chinese economist has suggested that men share wives to resolve his country’s gender imbalance.

Xie Zuoshi said that polyandry could solve the crisis rooted in China’s one-child policy and preference for sons.

By 2020 the country will have an estimated 30million bachelors, known as guanggun or “bare branches”. So Professor Xie advised a utilitarian approach and said that two men or more should marry the same woman.

He wrote that having an excess of unmarried men raised the price of goods, led to a rise in crime and left poor men in the lurch.

Professor Xie’s post went viral and sparked an indignant debate. Feminists also attacked him for suggesting men could ‘buy’ themselves a wife.
