LONDON - For most couples, getting married is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Lisa Gant and Alex Pelling, however, have said “I do” 66 times - in more than 30 countries.
For three years they have been on a round-the-world trip, going through one wedding ceremony in every destination.
But they have yet to take part in a legally binding ceremony. Instead, their aim is to find the perfect location for their nuptials before they become man and wife for real.
The couple, from Didsbury, Manchester, have “married” aboard a million-dollar yacht, at a Texan ranch where Pelling, 34, lassoed his bride, and taken part in many traditional ceremonies, including a topless Embera tribe wedding in Panama. More unorthodox ceremonies include a vampire wedding in Los Angeles. The ceremonies have involved shamans, Zulu chiefs, pastors, vicars, rabbis and even a voodoo priestess.
Pelling, who ran a motor repair business, said: “The point of our journey is to experience the way other cultures celebrate marriage.”
In 2011 the couple emigrated to Australia, making the trip mostly by camper van. But first they had an unofficial ceremony in Manchester with Gant, 32, in a cream Charlotte Balbier gown which she has worn at 14 subsequent weddings (including one under water).
Their most recent wedding was in Karachi, Pakistan, in May, and they are planning their 67th ceremony in India for early next year.
