London - Dog lovers from around the world are competing to adopt a mongrel with a serious eye condition abandoned by its owner at a railway station with a suitcase of belongings, an animal welfare charity said Thursday.

“We've had phone calls from all over - the US, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Canada, Germany - and hundreds and hundreds of emails,” Scottish SPCA spokeswoman Amanda Smith said. “It's just gone crazy since we put Kai on the website.”

The shar-pei crossbreed was left tied to a railing at Ayr station along with a suitcase that contained a pillow, blanket, toys, food and a bowl.

Three-year-old Kai needs surgery for entropions, inward-growing eyelids, but is otherwise healthy.

The SPCA is drawing up a shortlist of prospective owners but will insist that they come to Glasgow, Scotland's biggest city, for an interview.

“We'd need to do a home check,” Smith said. “People would need to come and meet him first before we'd even consider them.”

That would mean big airfares for some of the prospective owners and turn Kai into a very expensive pet.
