Johannesburg - In a controversial move, Bahamian pupil Ashvonn Russell arrived at her matric dance in an ambulance.

She pulled the stunt as part of the “best entrance” competition that the Bahamas school runs on the day of the dance.

Russell reportedly arrived in an ambulance and was pulled out of the ambulance on a stretcher faking unconsciousness.

In a Snow White move, her date kissed her on the cheek and brought her “back to life” - waking her from her spellbound slumber.

Russell won the award but is in trouble after images of her actions went viral via social media across the world.

She told Buzzfeed that she wanted to exercise her creativity by thinking out of the box.

“Sleeping Beauty with a modern twist captured my interest for my prom entrance.”

She said she had not planned to offend anyone by her actions after she heard about the controversy the photos had caused.

“My hope for this theme was genuinely and solely to win best entrance and not for some of the negative attention and exposure it has received.

“For all the people of my great nation and around the world that I have offended, I apologise.”

The employees of the emergency service have reportedly been suspended after complaints were made by locals.

According to the Bahamian newspaper The Tribune, the Public Hospitals Authority (PHA) suspended an employee and issued a statement that an investigation would be launched to find out how the incident had happened.

“The use of the ambulance is in direct contravention of the rules regarding the dispatching and use of emergency vehicles, which should be dispatched solely for the purpose of medical transport,” the PHA said.
