London -

When Sam Boulter arrived at his club to find a trail of destruction he thought the premises had been burgled.

Glasses had been smashed, drinks poured all over the floor and the place trashed.

Then a squirrel emerged from its hiding place in a box of crisps.

Mr Boulter, 62, watched in amazement as it staggered around the room.

It is thought to have become tipsy after turning on one of the ale pumps at the Honeybourne Railway Club near Evesham, Worcestershire.

The animal was finally caught in the gentlemen’s toilets and thrown out of the bathroom window - but not before it had caused £300 worth of damage.

Mr Boulter said: “When I opened the door it was ransacked.

“I’d never seen anything like it before - he had run around the shelves and across the bar. There were bottles scattered around, money scattered around... he had obviously run across the bar’s pumps and managed to turn on the Caffrey’s [ale] tap.”

He added that the animal looked “worse for wear” after his inadvertent visit at the weekend.

“He is the rowdiest customer we have ever had,” Mr Boulter said.

“It’s safe to say he is now barred from the club for life.”
