New York — There’s loud talking and, of course, phones ringing. But theater etiquette might have taken a turn for the bizarre last week when a patron at Broadway’s “Hand to God” climbed onstage before the show to try to recharge his phone in an outlet.

Ushers converged and the young man was pulled off the stage July 2. A public announcement was made warning patrons to avoid any similar acts. Plus, it was pointless: The outlet onstage was just a prop, created by Tony Award winner Beowulf Boritt.

Actress Sarah Stiles tweeted: “#fullmoon or #idiot?”

Playwright Robert Askins’ bracing comedy mixes violence, swearing, brutal honesty, parental failure, church hypocrisy and plenty of sex — of both human and puppet varieties.

A production spokesman confirmed the incident Tuesday.
