Durban - Ten people were arrested after police discovered heroin with a street value of R7 million at a house in Ramsgate, south of Durban, on Wednesday.

Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said the bust was the result of months of intense investigation by the Hawks. He said a drug syndicate found to be operating in a “plush” Ramsgate suburb was, in fact, a Durban-based syndicate that had moved to the South Coast and were using the house as a “processing and packaging clandestine laboratory”.

The Hawks and the National Intervention Unit raided the house and discovered 120 000 packed straws of heroin and 8kg of unpacked heroin estimated to be worth more than R7 million.

Zwane said 10 occupants of the house, aged between 22 and 29, were arrested and would appear in the Ramsgate Magistrate’s Court later on Wednesday to face charges of dealing in drugs.
