171 arrests in North West Fiela swoop

Rustenburg - At least 171people were arrested for various offences during Operation Fiela raids in North West, the provincial police said on Friday.

Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said the operation was held simultaneously on Thursday.

“It was during the operation that 113 fines were issued for liquor, traffic and second hand goods related offenses. Out of these arrests, 29 were effected in Mahikeng, 38 in Rustenburg, 58 in Brits, 24 in Klerksdorp and 22 in Potchefstroom. (a total of) 62 undocumented persons were also taken in for processing and verification of their documents,” said Mokgwabone.

He said dagga, counterfeit goods, vehicle body, copper cables and cigarettes were seized during the operations.

“The suspects include a 24-year-old man who was arrested for two cases of burglary residential, one case of theft out of motor vehicle and another case of attempted theft out of motor vehicle. These crimes were committed between 2013 and 2014 in Unit 12, Unit 13, Motlhabeng and Tloung villages in Mmabatho.”

He said all arrested people were expected to appear in courts in various parts of the province on Monday.
